In short: In the 1950s, Albania's air travel was a tool of socialist alignment, restricted to a few Eastern Bloc capitals. Today, Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza is one of the Balkans' busiest hubs, having recently shattered a decade-long growth curve to welcome over 10 million passengers in a single year.

The evolution of Tirana's aviation reflects Albania's broader geopolitical shifts. Domestic flights began in 1926 under a German monopoly, but the infrastructure we see today dates back to a construction period between 1955 and 1957. During the communist era, the airport served as a gateway for the socialist bloc; after 1953, flights were primarily inaugurated to Moscow and other Eastern European capitals. During the 1970s, a weekly long-distance route to Beijing, transiting through Tehran and Bucharest, was provided by the airport.

The collapse of the communist regime in 1991 triggered a rapid liberalization of travel. While the airport saw a sevenfold increase in traffic by 1999, it was the mid-2000s that saw a massive modernization effort. A 20-year concession agreement in 2005 led to the construction of a new passenger terminal designed by Malaysian architect Hin Tan. This infrastructure shift allowed the airport to scale from roughly 1.5 million passengers in 2010 to a record 11.6 million in 2025.

The airport's ownership has been as dynamic as its traffic. It moved from a long-standing monopoly to being owned by China Everbright Limited in 2017, before being sold to the Kastrati Group in December 2020 for €71 million. Currently, this facility remains Albania's sole hub for regular commercial travel, bolstered by an expanding multimodal system featuring a 24-hour bus route and a new electrified rail link set for early 2027.
