From Soviet Hub to European Gateway: The Evolution of RMO
In short: Chișinău International Airport is more than a transit point; it is a mirror of Moldova's shifting identity. From its 1926 beginnings to modern renovations and geopolitical hurdles, the airport has navigated radical shifts in aviation technology, regional politics, and national sovereignty.
The airport’s history is marked by significant transitions in naming and status. Originally known by the Russian/English name Kishinev (code KIV), it officially adopted the code RMO on January 18, 2024, to reflect 'Republica Moldova.' While its main terminal dates back to the 1970s with an initial capacity of 1.2 million passengers, a massive modernization in 2002 by Akfen Holding expanded that capacity to 5.4 million. This renovation included an annex building of 4,270 m2 and comprehensive upgrades to security, luggage handling, and climate systems.
Geopolitics has frequently dictated the airport's operational rhythm. It closed entirely on February 24, 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, before partially reopening in March of that same year. The facility also faced a period of uncertainty when WizzAir suspended flights in March 2023 due to safety concerns; however, after diplomatic efforts by the Moldovan Parliament, the airline announced its return for December 2024.
Infrastructure growth continues through significant investment and engineering. In 2017, plans were unveiled for a second runway to replace an existing taxiway north of the current strip. This project saw Runway 09–27 begin operations on September 13, 2018. These developments are supported by a €19 million loan intended for rehabilitating runways and ramps, with potential co-financing from the European Investment Bank and the EBRD.
Beyond logistics, the airport serves as a cultural site. It houses a commemorative plaque for the first scheduled flight in 1926, a sculpture group titled "Crew" installed in 2019, and a monument featuring a decommissioned Tu-134 aircraft at its entrance.
