The wealthy, technologically advanced neighbors of the Spanish conquistadors
In short: Prior to Spanish settlement, California's wealthiest and most technologically sophisticated Indigenous people included the Tongva. They controlled a vast trade network and a sophisticated economy, exercising considerable influence over their neighbors through a complex system of maritime travel and regional commerce.
The Tongva were a group of culturally and dialectally related Indigenous people who inhabited the lowlands, seacoasts, and islands of southern California. While they are often grouped together, they were historically identified primarily by their individual villages. While the Tataviam (Fernandeño) resided within the San Fernando Valley and the Nicolino (Nicoleño) stayed on San Nicolas Island, the 'Tongva proper' resided in parts of northern Orange County plus southern and eastern Los Angeles County.
Their prosperity was rooted in a diverse economy and advanced technology. Coastal and interior groups relied on acorns and wild plants, supplemented by hunting and fishing. In contrast, the islanders focused on sea mammals, birds, and mollusks, constructing dwellings from whale ribs covered in sea-lion skins. They utilized te'aats—plank-built boats—to maintain an extensive trade network. This commerce was underpinned by a currency of clamshell beads and the use of soapstone from a quarry on Santa Catalina Island to craft everything from ceremonial vessels to artistic carvings.
The Spanish arrival in 1542 marked a catastrophic shift. By 1771, the founding of Mission San Gabriel initiated a period of forced relocation and virtual enslavement. The Tongva were devastated by Old World diseases to which they had no immunity, leading to a rapid societal collapse. Despite this, they resisted, notably in a 1785 rebellion led by Nicolás José and the female chief Toypurina. Following Mexico's independence in 1821, the secularization of missions turned many Tongva into landless refugees as their ancestral lands were sold to elite ranchers.
