From indoor arenas to a multi-tiered professional soccer powerhouse
In short: What began in 1985 as a small indoor league in the Southwest has transformed into a massive, multi-tiered ecosystem. Today, the United Soccer League manages everything from professional men's and women's divisions to youth academies, shaping the landscape of American soccer.
The United Soccer League (USL) has undergone a profound evolution since its inception. The league's origins date to 1985, following Francisco Marcos's establishment of the Southwest Indoor Soccer League. Starting as a small five-team circuit run by arena owners, the group grew to six sides in 1986 once Marcos's Austin Sockadillos entered. By 1989, the league began shifting its focus toward outdoor soccer, aiming to align with the United States Soccer Federation's vision for a professionalized soccer structure ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The organization's history is marked by significant structural shifts and competition. In 1997, a merger with the American Professional Soccer League created the USISL A-League. The 1990s also saw the launch of the organization's first women's league. However, the path was not without friction; in 2009, dissatisfaction among clubs led to the formation of the North American Soccer League (NASL) as a breakaway competitor. The USL responded by unifying its professional divisions into USL Pro in 2010, eventually rebranding to the USL Championship in 2019.
Today, the USL operates a complex hierarchy. For men, this includes the second-division USL Championship, the third-division USL League One, and the developmental USL League Two. The women's side features the professional USL Super League, launched in 2024, and the pre-professional USL W League, reintroduced in 2022. Looking forward, the USL is planning a third men's professional league, USL Premier, for a 2028 debut. Notably, the organization recently moved to adopt a promotion and relegation system across all its professional leagues.
