In short: A Cleveland company started by making simple cap screws eventually built the engines that powered trans-Atlantic flights and the spacecraft that reached the lunar surface. TRW Inc. is a masterclass in industrial evolution, transforming from a local workshop into a global titan of aerospace and automotive technology.

The lineage of TRW Inc. Established by David Kurtz alongside four locals in 1901, the Cleveland Cap Screw Company initially produced bolts featuring electrically welded heads. The company's trajectory shifted dramatically in 1904 when welder Charles E. Thompson adapted these manufacturing methods to produce automobile engine valves. This innovation caught the attention of pioneer automaker Alexander Winton, who purchased the firm and installed Thompson as general manager.

By the 1920s, the company—then known as Steel Products Co.—became a global leader in valve technology. Their sodium-filled valves were notably used in the Spirit of St. Louis for Charles Lindbergh's 1927 trans-Atlantic flight. During World War II, the firm pivoted to aircraft engine parts and gas-turbine products.

In 1953, seeking new markets, Thompson Products provided financial support to engineers Simon Ramo and Dean Wooldridge, leading to a 1958 merger that formed Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc., eventually shortened to TRW in 1965. The American space programme relied heavily on TRW, which manufactured one-third of all satellites plus the Apollo Lunar Lander's descent engine. Beyond space exploration, the company diversified into high-energy laser research, developing the first integrated laser weapon to destroy an operational rocket warhead in flight by 2000. The corporation's reach expanded further through acquisitions, including the Credit Data Corporation in 1969 and England’s LucasVarity PLC in 1999, before it was eventually acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2002.
