Why two women on a motorcycle became Britain's most unlikely culinary icons
In short: Between 1996 and 1999, Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright redefined television cooking. Riding a Triumph Thunderbird with a sidecar, the duo rejected haute cuisine in favor of lard, clotted cream, and fatty meats. Their show, Two Fat Ladies, remains a cult classic for its unapologetic, aggressively unfashionable approach to food.
The programme was produced by Optomen Television for the BBC and spanned four series, totaling twenty-four episodes. The premise was simple yet eccentric: the hosts traveled across the United Kingdom, with one episode filmed in Ireland and a Christmas special set in Jamaica. Paterson operated the motorcycle, which bore the registration N88 TFL—a nod to the British bingo call for eighty-eight—while Dickson Wright occupied the Watsonian Jubilee GP-700 sidecar.
The pair positioned themselves as cooks rather than chefs, deliberately distancing themselves from the pretensions of modern gastronomy. Their culinary philosophy celebrated traditional, heavy ingredients that were increasingly ignored by mainstream food media at the time. This ethos extended to their choice of locations, which ranged from an army garrison and an all-girls school to religious sites. One notable episode featured the duo at Westminster Cathedral, where Paterson prepared a dish she named Peaches Cardinal Hume, honoring the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Basil Hume.
The show's production was marked by its unique chemistry and the stars' distinct personalities, which were captured in four accompanying cookbooks. However, the series came to an abrupt end during its fourth season. Production was halted following the death of Jennifer Paterson, which occurred shortly after the completion of the fourth episode of that final series. Despite its relatively short run, the programme’s legacy persists through frequent international reruns and various home media releases, including a 2008 DVD set that features a tribute to Paterson and a collection of their signature recipes.
