In short: Ty Franck built a sprawling Solar System universe for a tabletop role-playing game long before he became a novelist. When his friend Daniel Abraham saw the depth of his world-building, they began a collaboration that would eventually become the acclaimed space opera series known as The Expanse.

Born in 1969, Ty Franck developed a detailed science fiction universe while living in New Mexico. He used this setting for several role-playing game campaigns, one of which included fellow writer Daniel Abraham. Impressed by the extensive research and structural complexity Franck had invested in the game's lore, Abraham proposed they adapt the setting into a novel. This partnership eventually led to the creation of the joint pseudonym James S. A. Corey, under which they have published numerous works.

The writing process is a highly collaborative effort. Franck provides the core story and world development, while Abraham focuses on structure and prose. They meet weekly to outline chapters and alternate writing for specific characters, such as Miller, Melba, Avasarala, Bull, and Prax. They then swap and rewrite each other's work until the final product is so seamless that even the authors find it difficult to distinguish their individual contributions. This synergy helped launch the first novel, Leviathan Wakes, in June 2011.

The success of The Expanse extended well beyond the initial books. The series received significant critical recognition, including a Hugo Award win in 2020. The universe expanded through various novellas and short stories, such as The Butcher of Anderson Station and The Churn, which provided background for secondary characters. Beyond the novels, Franck and Abraham have worked as writers and producers on the television adaptation of their series, which ran from 2015 to 2022. Most recently, in November 2024, Franck co-founded the production company Expanding Universe, signaling a new chapter in his career with a development deal at Amazon MGM Studios for a television adaptation of The Captive's War trilogy.
