The geographical hinge where two continents collide and converge

TURKEY: The Ancient Country Where Europe Ends and Asia Begins | Travel Documentary · 59:14 · Video: Nations Uncovered · Watch at the source

In short: Turkey sits at a unique geological and cultural crossroads, serving as the literal meeting point between Europe and Asia. This position has transformed the region into a permanent theater of migration, conquest, and architectural evolution for thousands of years.

The Anatolian Peninsula, often referred to as Asia Minor, forms the western extremity of the Asian continent. To the north lies the Black Sea, while the Mediterranean sits to the south and the Aegean to the west. The southeastern Taurus Mountains typically delineate its eastern edge. Because it sits at this specific junction between two continents, the region has historically served as a primary corridor for numerous migrations and conquests.

The area's history is marked by a succession of powerful empires that left distinct cultural imprints. It was the original home of the Hittite kingdom (c. 1700–1180 BCE), followed later by Indo-European peoples who established the Phrygian kingdom. Persian Achaemenian rulers governed this territory during the 6th century BCE until Alexander the Great seized it between 334–333 BCE. From the 1st century BCE onward, the area was absorbed into the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire.

Anatolia joined the Byzantine Empire after the Roman Empire divided in 395 CE. Before Ottoman rule solidified during the 15th century, the area faced repeated raids from Arabs, Turks, Crusaders, Mongols, and Timur's Turkic forces. This layered history is still visible today in Turkey's diverse landscapes—ranging from volcanic formations in Cappadocia to the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale—and its architectural heritage, which continues to shape modern cultural traditions.

Today, the modern Republic of Turkey (established in 1923) preserves this extraordinary mix of nature and human achievement. From the bustling bazaars of Istanbul to the turquoise waters of the Turkish Riviera, the country remains a primary example of how geography can dictate the flow of global history.
