In the heart of Saudi Arabia, an ancient oasis has sustained life for millennia.
In short: AlUla is a desert valley that has served as a vital crossroads for civilizations for 200,000 years. From the Dadanite kingdom to the Nabataeans, this fertile landscape of sandstone cliffs and hidden water sources acted as a hub for trade, language, and human memory in the Arabian Peninsula.
AlUla’s history is defined by its role as a sanctuary in the desert. Archaeological evidence indicates permanent human settlement dating back to 5000 BCE. The region’s strategic position along the Incense Road allowed it to flourish as a center for trade, connecting diverse cultures from Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Arabian Peninsula. By the first millennium BCE, the city of Dadan emerged as the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, leaving behind sophisticated stone architecture and innovative water management systems that highlight the wealth of these early societies.
The Nabataean influence reached its zenith between 50 BCE and 106 CE, particularly at Hegra, a site now recognized as Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage location. Famous for its monumental tombs carved directly into the rock, Hegra reflects the artistic and cultural exchange of the era. Nearby, Jabal Ikmah serves as an open-air library, where hundreds of inscriptions carved into sandstone provide an intimate look at the evolution of ancient Arabic languages and dialects. These petroglyphs, alongside the natural monolith of Elephant Rock, underscore the region's unique geological and historical significance.
In more recent centuries, the Old Town of AlUla became a vital waypoint for pilgrims traveling to Makkah. Occupied from the late 12th century until the 1980s, the town featured a dense maze of mudbrick houses protected by a defensive wall. Today, the Royal Commission for AlUla, established in 2017, works alongside UNESCO to preserve this legacy. Through initiatives aligned with the Vision 2030 program, the region is being transformed into a sustainable destination, balancing the protection of its millennial heritage with modern economic and cultural development.
