The evolution of distance learning from 1970s classrooms to global online platforms
In short: Walden University didn't start as a digital giant. It began as a niche program for working teachers to earn doctorates while remaining in their jobs. Today, it serves students in over 145 countries, balancing a massive scale with a focus on workforce-ready skills.
Founded in 1970 by New York teachers Bernie and Rita Turner, Walden University was designed specifically for working adults. Its first classes in 1971 were held in Naples, Florida, primarily for school administrators. The model was revolutionary for its time: students could form dissertation topics with faculty partners while continuing to work at their respective schools. By 1972, the institution conferred its first 46 PhDs and 24 EdDs.
The university transitioned from a local distance-learning pioneer to a major online institution, moving its headquarters to Minneapolis in 1982. It has since expanded to offer over 100 degrees and certificates across fields like Nursing, Psychology, and Social Work. To maintain quality in this high-volume environment, Walden holds programmatic accreditations from several bodies, including the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Walden currently functions as an Opportunity University designated by Carnegie and a Certified B Corporation. It distinguishes itself by offering direct assessment competency-based education via the Tempo Learning platform—a distinction it shares with only five other U.S. government-approved institutions. While it faces scrutiny regarding student debt, the university emphasizes its role in providing accessible, transformative education for busy professionals, supported by a suite of services including a career planning center and doctoral peer mentoring.
at the end of the first paragraph in the The school received six Effective Practice Awards from the Online Learning Consortium between 2016 and 2019. In May 2023, the U.S. Distance Learning Association recognized its innovation and research. Students from over 145 countries now access these programs. The university also offers a Believe & Achieve Scholarship to help working adults save up to 25% on costs.
