In short: Operating as a top-tier league alongside the NWSL, the USL Super League has abandoned the traditional draft system in favor of a free-agent model. With no caps on squad sizes or salaries, the league is aggressively building a professional pathway for women, challenging established norms in the American soccer landscape.

Established in September 2021 by the United Soccer League, the USL Super League (USLS) represents a significant shift in the American soccer hierarchy. By securing Division I sanctioning from U.S. Soccer in February 2024, it became the first time two leagues simultaneously occupied the top tier of the women's game in the United States. Led by president Amanda Vandervort, the league was designed to create a comprehensive youth-to-pro pipeline, distinguishing itself from the pre-professional USL W League.

The league's operational philosophy diverges sharply from typical American sports structures. Instead of a college draft, clubs build their rosters entirely through free agency and transfers. There are no restrictions on squad sizes or salary caps, though minimum salaries are set between US$35,000 and US$37,000. This open-market approach is paired with a unique scheduling history; the league initially utilized a fall-to-summer calendar to align with international traditions, incorporating a winter break to mitigate climate challenges. However, starting in 2026, the league will transition to a spring-to-fall schedule to match the National Women's Soccer League.

Competition is structured around eight clubs playing four round-robins annually. The team with the best regular-season record claims the Players' Shield, while the top four clubs advance to a single-elimination playoff tournament to determine the champion. Despite its rapid growth, the league faces the volatility inherent in professional sports; for instance, inaugural member Spokane Zephyr FC folded after the 2025–26 season following a decline in attendance. As the league evolves, it continues to refine its broadcast strategy through a multi-year deal with NBCUniversal, streaming matches on Peacock, while maintaining its identity as a premier destination for professional women's talent.
