In short: Known as the New Hebrides until 1980, the Vanuatu national football team has spent decades navigating the Oceania Football Confederation. While historically a regional competitor, recent years have seen the squad venture beyond their home continent, testing their mettle against global opponents and securing historic finishes in major tournaments.

Governed by the Vanuatu Football Federation, the team operates under the umbrella of both FIFA and the Oceania Football Confederation. Before the nation gained its current name in 1980, the squad competed under the banner of the New Hebrides. Throughout its history, the team has frequently challenged regional hierarchies, most notably in 2004 when a 4–2 victory over New Zealand effectively derailed the regional powerhouse's path toward the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The team's ambition has expanded significantly in recent years, moving beyond traditional Oceania fixtures. In 2023, Vanuatu participated in the Intercontinental Cup in India, marking their debut tournament outside their home region. Despite facing challenging results against Lebanon and India, they secured a victory against Mongolia to finish third. This international exposure continued in 2024 when they were invited to the FIFA Series in Jeddah, where they encountered their first-ever African opponent, Guinea.

Success within Oceania has also reached new heights. After years of finishing fourth in the OFC Nations Cup—a feat achieved in 1973, 2000, and 2002—the team reached the tournament final for the first time in 2024. Although they ultimately finished as runners-up following a 3–0 loss to New Zealand on June 30, 2024, the achievement underscored their growth. This momentum carried into 2025, when the team successfully claimed the MSG Prime Minister's Cup, signaling a new chapter for the federation's competitive standing.
