Why the world's smallest nation maintains a football team that rejects professional status
In short: With a population of roughly 900, Vatican City faces unique challenges in fielding a squad. Its national team is composed entirely of local workers, from security guards to government staff. Despite invitations to join international bodies, the association intentionally remains amateur, prioritizing ethical values over the business of modern football.
The Vatican City national football team operates under the Vatican Amateur Sports Association, established in 1972. Because the state’s tiny population consists largely of Swiss Guard members who cannot be away from their duties for long periods, assembling a full roster is a logistical hurdle. In 2010, the team famously failed to participate in the Viva World Cup simply because they could not gather 15 players. Consequently, the team plays only rare international matches, having faced Monaco four times between 2002 and 2014.
While UEFA officials have suggested that the Vatican could join international competitions if it applied, the association has consistently declined. Leadership, including president Domenico Ruggiero, has argued that FIFA-level football has become too commercialized. The Vatican prefers to maintain an amateur ethos, viewing sport as a vehicle for friendship and moral education rather than a business. This stance extends to their sponsorships; in 2019, the team rejected a lucrative offer from a betting firm because it failed to meet their strict ethical standards.
The team’s identity is deeply tied to the Holy See’s broader philosophy on sports. Popes have long been vocal supporters of the game, with Benedict XVI criticizing the scheduling of matches during family lunch hours as an intrusion on life. Although there have been discussions about potential UEFA membership—including a conversation between Pope Francis and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin—the team remains independent. They even avoid alternate confederations like ConIFA to sidestep the diplomatic complexities of associating with disputed territories or breakaway regions.
