In short: Nicknamed Les Cagous, the New Caledonia national football team has long been a dominant force in Oceania. Though their federation dates back to 1928, they only gained FIFA membership in 2004. Since then, they have consistently challenged regional giants, even reaching an unprecedented inter-confederation play-off for the World Cup.

For decades, the New Caledonian selection operated in a restricted capacity. Because of their institutional ties to the French Football Federation, they were largely confined to friendly matches or regional tournaments like the Pacific Games. They participated in the Oceania Football Cup only as guests, yet they frequently demonstrated their quality on the pitch, securing third-place finishes in the tournament's first two editions in 1973 and 1980.

The landscape shifted in 2004 when the Fédération Calédonienne de Football officially joined FIFA as its 205th member. This transition allowed the team to compete for World Cup qualification. Their progress was rapid; by September 2008, they reached number 95 in the global rankings, becoming only the fourth nation from the confederation to break into the top 100. Their rivalry with Tahiti remains a central pillar of their sporting identity, with the two sides having played 62 matches between 1953 and 2018, resulting in 28 wins for New Caledonia.

The team reached a historic milestone during the qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. By advancing to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, they became the first Melanesian nation to reach an inter-confederation play-off. Although their journey ended in a 1–0 defeat to Jamaica in Guadalajara, Mexico, on 26 March 2026, the achievement solidified their status as a rising power. With seven gold medals at the Pacific Games—the most recent in 2023—Les Cagous continue to punch well above their weight on the international stage.
