The $30 billion temple where gods took out loans for weddings
In short: In the hills of Tirumala, a deity is said to have borrowed wealth from the god of riches just to marry a princess. Today, this site stands as India's wealthiest Hindu temple, blending ancient mythology with massive modern infrastructure.
The Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh, is a cornerstone of Srivaishnava Hinduism. It is home to the deity Venkateswara (also known as Balaji or Srinivasa), an avatar of Vishnu believed to have appeared on earth during the current age of Kali Yuga to save humanity from trials. The temple is renowned for its immense wealth—estimated at about $30 billion in 2024—and its massive scale, attracting nearly 25 million pilgrims annually.
The site's sacredness is rooted in three primary Puranic legends. One describes Vishnu as a boar (Varaha) who saved the earth from a demon and then placed a mountain on Tirumala. Another tells of a strength contest between the god of wind and the cosmic serpent Shesha; the resulting landscape formed the Seshachalam Hills, with Venkata hill representing Shesha's final hood. To wed princess Padmavati, Vishnu allegedly borrowed funds from Kubera, who is known as the wealth deity, according to a well-known myth.
While local tradition claims the temple is 5,000 years old, the earliest written records date back to Tamil works like the Tolkappiyam (c. 1st–4th century CE). The presiding deity is considered 'svayambhu' (self-manifesting), allegedly discovered by a king named Tondaman who excavated a termite mound to find a hidden shrine. Today, the temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), a corporate oversight board established in 1932 that oversees everything from the signature 'laddus' to the massive queue complexes required to manage daily footfalls of 60,000 to 80,000 people.
The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams—sacred sites mentioned by bhakti poets between the 7th and 10th centuries. It remains a site of intense devotion where pilgrims often perform 'tonsure' (shaving their heads) and seek 'darshan,' a direct view of the deity, which can involve significantly long wait times during peak festivals like Brahmotsavam in September–October.
