SpaceX is building the world's largest spaceport in the marshes of Vermilion Parish, Louisiana
In short: A massive $100 billion investment is transforming the Pecan Island area of Louisiana into a global aerospace hub. Designed to support thousands of annual launches, this project aims to make spaceflight as routine as air travel, while promising significant economic growth and coastal restoration for the local region.
The Starbase Louisiana project represents a monumental shift for the region, with SpaceX committing over $100 billion to construct its largest launch facility to date. Located near Pecan Island, the site is planned to feature five distinct launch complexes, each equipped with two pads, alongside essential infrastructure like propellant production facilities and employee housing. Construction is slated to begin by the end of 2027, with the company targeting its inaugural launch for 2029.
Beyond the aerospace infrastructure, the project is expected to act as a major economic engine for the Acadiana region. Projections indicate the creation of 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average annual salary of $92,600, supplemented by approximately 8,100 indirect job opportunities. To ensure local benefit, the agreement includes a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) structure, which will deliver over $825 million in direct payments to local taxing bodies over 25 years, alongside a $25 million charitable contribution to the Community Foundation of Acadiana.
The project also integrates environmental considerations, specifically regarding the state's vulnerable coastline. SpaceX is collaborating with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to pursue habitat restoration and shoreline stabilization efforts. Officials emphasize that the development is designed to avoid active restoration sites, and they suggest that the sheer scale of this private investment will enable levels of coastal protection and environmental enhancement that would otherwise remain unachievable for the region.
Regulatory oversight remains a critical component of the development. SpaceX is currently navigating federal, state, and local permitting processes, which include comprehensive environmental and wetlands reviews. The state has implemented performance-based incentives, ensuring that SpaceX must meet specific investment and employment benchmarks before accessing state-funded benefits, providing a layer of accountability for the public resources involved in this historic industrial expansion.
