How a Canadian city turned scrap aluminum into a wartime victory effort
In short: Long before it became a hub for winter sports and summer festivals, Vernon, British Columbia, played a unique role in the Second World War. Local residents, including children, traded scrap aluminum for movie tickets at the town's Art Deco cinema, directly fueling the production of essential military aircraft.
Located 440 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, Vernon was incorporated as a city in 1892. Named after Forbes George Vernon, a pioneer member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, the city evolved from a cattle ranching and orchard hub into a year-round destination. Its history is deeply rooted in the Okanagan people, who originally settled the area around Okanagan Lake and Swan Lake, naming the site Nintle Moos Chin, or 'jumping over place where the creek narrows.'
The city's cultural heart is exemplified by the Towne Cinema, a 1930s Art Deco structure built between 1929 and 1930. During the Second World War, this venue served as a critical community anchor. Beyond hosting live entertainment and stage plays, it became a focal point for the war effort. Patrons were encouraged to donate old aluminum pots and pans in exchange for free movie tickets. This collected metal was repurposed for the construction of warplanes and other vital military materials, supporting the Allied victory over the Nazi regime.
Today, Vernon remains a significant economic and recreational centre in the North Okanagan. With a population of 44,519 as of the 2021 census, the city balances its heritage with modern growth. It is renowned for its diverse tourism offerings, ranging from the prestigious Predator Ridge golf resort to world-class skiing at Silver Star Mountain. The city also maintains a vibrant arts scene, featuring a collection of heritage murals and the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre, ensuring that its history—from its Indigenous roots to its wartime contributions—remains a visible part of the community's identity.
