SpaceX prepares to bring the world's most powerful rocket to Florida
In short: While all Starship test flights have launched from Texas, a new environmental report reveals plans to expand operations to the historic Florida coast. This expansion could transform the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral into a high-frequency hub for lunar and Martian exploration.
SpaceX is moving beyond its South Texas facility, Starbase, to prepare for Starship operations at several Florida sites. According to a recent environmental impact report, the company is detailing plans to utilize Launch Complex 3 and 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. This documentation includes critical modeling on the chemical composition resulting from Raptor engines, as well as projections for engine sound levels and the sonic booms generated during reentry. The documentation provides essential data for predicting the environmental footprint of the final Raptor engine iterations.
Work is underway to build out Space Launch Complex 37 (SLC-37) within Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The U.S. Air Force granted approval for this development via a November 20 Record of Decision, following an extensive environmental review. If the FAA determines that airspace impacts are manageable, SLC-37 could potentially support up to 76 Starship launches and 152 landings annually. Construction at SLC-37 has already commenced. The expansion relies on the Federal Aviation Administration's assessment that the impact on local airspace remains within acceptable limits. This development is part of a broader strategy to evolve the spaceport into a facility capable of airport-like operations.
This move revisits a site with deep historical significance. SLC-37B once supported Saturn I and Saturn IB missions between 1964 and 1968, including the Apollo 5 mission. After years of inactivity, it hosted Delta IV rockets until April 2024. As SpaceX prepares to use both SLC-37 pads and Pad 39A, the Air Force has committed to mitigation measures to protect local species, such as the Florida scrub-jay and the southeastern beach mouse, from the environmental effects of these massive launches. The Air Force intends to implement specific strategies to compensate for any negative impacts on vulnerable wildlife, including the tricolored bat and eastern indigo snake. This follows a long-drawn-out review process that featured various public hearings.
