From Serbian fields to global dugouts: The tactical journey of Vladimir Ivić
In short: Vladimir Ivić transitioned from a prolific midfielder for Partizan and PAOK to a high-achieving manager across Europe and the Middle East. Known for his tactical discipline, Ivić secured back-to-back league titles in Israel and earned managerial accolades in Greece, England, and Russia, constantly evolving his approach across diverse footballing cultures.
Born in 1977, Vladimir Ivić began his professional playing career at Proleter Zrenjanin before moving to Partizan in 1998. During his six-year tenure there, he became a central figure, eventually serving as team captain after the departure of Saša Ilić in 2004. His time at Partizan was marked by significant domestic success, including three championship titles and two domestic cups. Internationally, he represented Serbia and Montenegro eight times between 2001 and 2004, participating in World Cup qualifiers and the Millennium Super Soccer Cup.
Following his departure from Partizan, Ivić experienced a nomadic playing career that took him to Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach and later to Greece. In Greece, he played for AEK Athens and Aris before finding a long-term home at PAOK. Over four seasons with the Thessaloniki club, he made 133 appearances. His transition to management began within the same organization, where he successfully led PAOK's under-20 team to a league title before taking charge of the senior squad in 2016, ultimately securing the Greek Cup in 2017.
Ivić’s managerial reputation grew significantly during his time at Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he arrived in 2018. His debut season was particularly dominant, as he led the team to a championship with a 31-point margin and only a single loss. He repeated this success in his second season. His career path subsequently led him through Watford in England, a return to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and a stint at the Russian club Krasnodar. As of February 2025, Ivić serves as the head coach for the UAE Pro League club Al-Ain, continuing a career defined by rapid adaptation to new leagues and environments.
