From refugee to Bundesliga manager: the remarkable rise of Miron Muslić
In short: Miron Muslić fled the Bosnian war as a child, arriving in Austria with nothing. Decades later, he has transformed from a lower-league striker into a tactical force in European football, recently securing promotion for Schalke 04. His journey is a testament to resilience in the face of constant upheaval.
Born in 1982 in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina, Muslić’s life was upended by conflict. In 1992, at age nine, he and his family fled their hometown of Bihać overnight, escaping the siege to settle in Innsbruck, Austria. This early experience of displacement shaped his perspective, as he later recalled leaving with only what they could carry in their hands.
Muslić’s football career began in the Wacker Innsbruck academy in 1994. He spent years navigating the Austrian lower leagues, including stints at Wörgl, SVG Reichenau, and Hall, before a brief Bundesliga appearance with SV Ried in 2007. His transition to coaching began while still playing, eventually leading him to managerial roles across Europe. His tenure at Cercle Brugge was particularly notable; he took a team from the relegation zone to a fourth-place finish in the 2023–24 season, securing European qualification for the first time in 14 years.
His career trajectory accelerated after a brief, high-profile stint in England with Plymouth Argyle, where he oversaw a historic 1–0 FA Cup victory against Premier League leaders Liverpool in February 2025. Shortly after, he moved to Germany to manage Schalke 04. Under his leadership, the club achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in May 2026, earning him a contract extension through 2028. Today, Muslić stands as a prominent figure in professional management, balancing his career with his family life alongside his wife, Ensada, and their three children.
