How a railroad division headquarters became a South Dakota city with a giant pheasant
In short: Founded in 1880 during a massive land and railroad boom, Huron, South Dakota, owes its existence to the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. Today, this prairie city is known for hosting the South Dakota State Fair and housing a peculiar, oversized statue of a pheasant, marking its unique cultural footprint.
Huron was established in 1880 after the Chicago and Northwestern Railway selected the west bank of the James River as its division headquarters. General manager Marvin Hughitt directed the selection, and the company secured 880 acres for the site. The city's first settler, John Cain, a printer from New York, learned of the railroad's plans in Chicago, ensuring the town would become a central operating hub. Named for the Huron Indians, the city grew rapidly, even vying with Pierre to become the state capital until 1904.
The city's governance has evolved significantly since its 1881 founding. After starting with a board of four trustees, it adopted an alderman system in 1882 and incorporated in 1883. By 1910, the structure shifted to a city commission form, and in 1935, it adopted a city manager model. Today, the commission form remains, featuring a mayor and four commissioners elected at large for three-year terms, overseeing departments ranging from public safety to finance.
Modern Huron serves as a regional hub, hosting federal field offices for agencies like the USDA and the Social Security Administration. The city experiences a humid continental climate with wide temperature extremes, ranging from a record low of -43 °F in 1912 to a high of 112 °F in 1966. With a 2024 estimated population of 14,515, it remains the eighth-most populous city in South Dakota, balancing its industrial roots with community amenities like the Huron Event Center and the Splash Central waterpark.
