In short: Born from the discovery of gold in the Free State, Welkom transformed from a farm into a major mining hub. Beyond its industrial roots, the city is famous for an unusual urban layout that eschews traditional traffic signals in favor of dozens of large, efficient traffic circles.

The story of Welkom began with the search for gold in the northwestern Free State, a region once dismissed by mining companies who doubted the presence of the precious metal south of the Vaal River. Early prospecting efforts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries faced repeated failure, but persistent exploration eventually proved the existence of gold-bearing reefs. By 1948, Welkom was officially proclaimed a town, and it later achieved city status in 1968. Its growth was inextricably linked to the mining of gold and uranium, with the city eventually contributing 21% to the free world's gold sales.

Geologically, the city sits on the southwestern edge of the Witwatersrand Basin, a massive structure filled with sedimentary rocks. The local goldfields are defined by complex fault lines, most notably the De Bron Fault, which features a vertical displacement of approximately 1,500 meters. Mining operations have historically targeted narrow, tabular reefs, such as the Basal Reef, which is the most common horizon for extraction. These deep-level mining activities have shaped not only the economy but also the physical landscape, characterized by headgears and reduction plants.

Welkom is also noted for its unique urban design. The city center is entirely free of parking meters and traffic lights, relying instead on 33 large traffic circles to manage vehicle flow. This design has become a subject of international study for its efficiency. However, the city has faced significant challenges, including natural disasters like a 1976 earthquake and a 1990 tornado, as well as ongoing infrastructure issues. Recent efforts are focused on massive upgrades to water and sewage systems to address long-standing maintenance problems in the region.
