In short: Most defenders are defined by what they prevent, not what they produce. Yet William Troost-Ekong shattered the status quo of African football by becoming the most prolific goal-scoring defender in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong’s career is a study in international mobility. After developing in the youth systems of Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur in England, he moved through various European leagues, including stints in the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Turkey, Italy, and Greece. His journey eventually led him to represent Nigeria at the senior level, where he earned over 80 caps and served as captain. His most significant historical milestone occurred during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. By netting five goals during the tournament, Troost-Ekong established a fresh record for defensive scoring in the competition's past, overtaking Stephen Keshi's former high point. He first debuted for the Super Eagles in a qualifying match against Chad in June 2015. Before choosing Nigeria, he represented the Netherlands at both under-19 and under-20 youth levels. His professional path began with senior roles at FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht.

His performance was so dominant that he was named the Player of the Tournament and included in the official Team of the Tournament. Beyond his defensive duties, Troost-Ekong has leveraged his platform for environmental and social advocacy. In 2024, he launched the Troost-Ekong Foundation to empower African youth through education and football. He also champions large-scale sustainability initiatives, such as the Great Green Wall—an 8,000km living structure across Africa intended to combat land degradation. This dual identity as a record-breaking athlete and an environmental advocate highlights a shift in how modern sports icons utilize their influence.
