In short: In 2003, Comedy Central aired Windy City Heat, a film documenting a massive, deceptive prank. Aspiring performer Perry Caravello was led to believe he was starring in a crime movie, while producers orchestrated every scene to provoke his reactions. It remains a singular, divisive entry in prank-based comedy history.

The project, known as The Perry Project, began in 1995 when comedians Don Barris and Tony Barbieri started pranking Perry Caravello. Caravello, discovered by Barris at an open mic night in 1992, was convinced he had landed the lead role of Stone Fury in a detective film. To maintain the ruse, producers Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla, along with director Bobcat Goldthwait, surrounded Caravello with fake production staff and celebrity cameos. Throughout filming, Caravello was subjected to various indignities, including being dumped into manure and forced to consume a nauseating milkshake, all while being followed by at least fifteen cameras.

The film's production was marked by surreal details, such as hiring actors to play characters with names like John Quincy Adams and Roman Polanski. Caravello, who often reacted to the stress with high-pitched shrieks, was encouraged by Barris to unleash his fury. Despite the film being a prank, Caravello was never told the truth at the end of production; instead, he was told the movie was scrapped due to issues, but that the behind-the-scenes footage would be released. This allowed him to believe in the film's reality while simultaneously acknowledging that many sequences were set up to antagonize him.

Critical reception of the film has been polarized. Some reviewers praised the commitment to the elaborate conceit, while others dismissed it as cruel or repetitive. The film eventually gained a cult following on home video and online platforms. Its legacy persists through The Big 3 Podcast, launched in 2010, which continues to feature the trio and many of the original film's running gags, including the intentional misspelling of Caravello's name. Legal complications, including a 2007 lawsuit filed by Caravello against Johnny Knoxville and others, further highlight the complex and often blurred lines between the performers' reality and the prank's construction.
