In short: When you hear the crackle of a radio tuning between stations at the start of Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', you aren't hearing a studio effect. You are listening to a real broadcast captured from David Gilmour's car radio, blending the boundary between live reality and studio artifice.

Recorded at Abbey Road Studios for the 1975 album of the same name, the song's introduction is a masterclass in sonic collage. The track segues from 'Have a Cigar' through a series of simulated radio stations, including a radio play and the opening of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony. To achieve this, guitarist David Gilmour recorded the intro on a twelve-string guitar, processing it to mimic the thin sound of an AM broadcast before overdubbing a fuller acoustic guitar solo. The final mix creates the illusion of a musician playing along to a radio broadcast.

While the song is frequently interpreted as a tribute to former bandmate Syd Barrett, the creators offer more nuanced perspectives. In the documentary 'The Story of Wish You Were Here', Roger Waters reveals he wrote the lyrics as a reflection on himself, though he acknowledges the song remains open to interpretation. Gilmour, meanwhile, admits that he can never perform the piece without being reminded of Barrett.

The recording session even featured a near-miss with jazz royalty. While recording downstairs at Abbey Road, jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli was invited by Gilmour to add a 'country fiddle' element. Grappelli accepted for a fee of £300—roughly £2,300 in 2025—but his contribution was mixed so low it is barely audible around the 5:21 mark. While legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin was also invited, he declined the session because he felt less comfortable with improvisation than Grappelli.
