In short: In 2018, the Pawtucket Red Sox were looking for a new home in Rhode Island. After facing insurmountable obstacles and rejected financing, the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox executed a sudden relocation to Worcester, Massachusetts, fundamentally reshaping the landscape of New England baseball.

The relocation of the Triple-A franchise was born from a period of intense uncertainty. Larry Lucchino headed a New England business collective that bought the Pawtucket Red Sox during the start of 2015. By mid-April of that year, ownership began exploring a move to Providence, Rhode Island. However, the plan faltered when Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo noted in September 2015 that the proposed site in Providence faced too many obstacles and was unsuitable for a stadium.

Following unsuccessful attempts to renovate McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket and explore new builds in Rhode Island, the team officially announced on August 17, 2018, that they would relocate to Worcester. The move culminated in the 2021 season with the debut of the Worcester Red Sox, affectionately known as the WooSox. To house the team, a $159 million stadium named Polar Park was constructed, with the City of Worcester contributing over half of the total cost, including land acquisition.

The franchise has undergone significant transitions since its arrival. In November 2023, Larry Lucchino announced his intention to retire, leading to the team's acquisition by Diamond Baseball Holdings. This new ownership also manages the Portland Sea Dogs and Salem Red Sox. Beyond the field, the club maintains deep local ties, such as the permanent retirement of uniform number 6 to honor six Worcester firefighters who died in the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. fire twenty years prior to the announcement.

The team's early years were marked by rapid evolution, from a 'name-that-team' competition in late 2018 to the introduction of various mascots like Smiley Ball and the dog mascot, Woofster. While the team debuted in 2021 as part of a restructured Triple-A East league, they have already established a legacy of high-volume rosters, using 75 players in 2022—the most for any Red Sox Triple-A affiliate.
