The restaurant that turned the Manhattan skyline into its main course
In short: Perched on the 106th and 107th floors of the North Tower, Windows on the World was more than a dining destination. It was a high-altitude culinary landmark that redefined the concept of a destination restaurant, offering panoramic views of the city before its tragic destruction in 2001.
Opened on April 19, 1976, Windows on the World was a massive 50,000-square-foot complex developed by restaurateur Joe Baum. It featured a main dining room, a bar called The Greatest Bar on Earth, and an intimate space known as Cellar in the Sky—later renamed Wild Blue in 1999. By its last complete year of business in 2000, the site earned US$37 million, ranking as America's top-grossing dining venue.
The venue maintained a formal atmosphere; guests dining in the primary hall had to wear jackets, which the staff could lend to anyone lacking one. The aesthetic was equally curated, with dinnerware, lighting, and menus designed by Milton Glaser. Such meticulousness launched a fresh period of 'captive audience' dining, where the eatery functioned as the main draw instead of a simple side effect of the structure.
The complex's history was marked by significant challenges, including a February 1993 bomb detonation in the North Tower's basement that killed six people, including Windows on the World receiving agent Wilfredo Mercado. After a US$25 million renovation, the restaurant reopened in June 1996. However, its legacy was cut short during the September 11, 2001, attacks. When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the tower at 8:46 a.m., all escape routes from the 92nd floor up were destroyed, and none of the restaurant's staff survived the subsequent collapse of the North Tower at 10:28 a.m.
