A Czech city serves as a playground for underground spies
In short: To stop a biological terror threat, a spy must navigate the historic streets of Prague. From the depths of the metro to the eerie silence of a bone ossuary, the game transforms real-world landmarks into a high-stakes battlefield for a 2002 action title.
The game follows Xander "xXx" Cage, an NSA agent tasked with dismantling the Anarchy 99 crime syndicate. The narrative takes the player through the Czech Republic, specifically targeting the city of Prague. The mission involves disabling hidden missiles across several iconic locations, including the Old Town, the Prague Metro, and the Sedlec Ossuary. The journey also extends to the mines of Kutná Hora.
Beyond the historic sites, the game moves to the city of Brno. Here, the player must confiscate stolen canisters of plutonium and destroy a cache of missiles and a precursor chemical virus. The final confrontation returns the player to Prague to prevent a bombing at a sports arena and raid a television tower to reach the syndicate's leader, Yorgi.
Developed by Digital Eclipse in roughly two months—a timeframe considered unusually fast for the Game Boy Advance—the game was released in August 2002. While critics often found the gameplay repetitive and the AI simplistic, the visual design of the backgrounds received praise for its detail. Specifically, the subway and catacomb levels were highlighted for their variety and atmosphere, even as some reviewers debated the perspective and animation style of the character sprites.
The production was a notable feat of rapid development. The team, which included veterans from titles like Spider-Man and X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse, had to pivot their original narrative to align with the film's storyline at the request of the filmmakers. Despite the short development cycle, the game managed to incorporate diverse mechanics, including side-scrolling combat and motorcycle levels inspired by the Sega Genesis title Road Rash.
