Beyond Neanderthals: The mysterious 'ghost' ancestors hiding in our DNA

Another Species of Human? The Truth About Denisovans · 7:01 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: We know we shared our world with Neanderthals and Denisovans, but our genetic code suggests the story is far more crowded. Recent research has uncovered traces of even more mysterious, extinct human lineages that left their mark on our ancestors through ancient interbreeding.

For much of the last 2 million years, several hominid species coexisted on Earth. While Neanderthals and Denisovans are well-known, researchers at UC Berkeley have used a novel technique to identify two additional 'ghost' ancestors within the modern human genome without needing ancient DNA fossils. This method reconstructs ancient genealogical connections by examining hundreds of present-day human genomes. This innovative approach allows scientists to learn about extinct populations without waiting for extraordinary fossil preservation. By studying current-day DNA, researchers can pinpoint exactly when these ancient relatives' genetic material entered our genomes.

One of these ghost lineages separated from the ancestors of Homo sapiens roughly 800,000 years ago. Over 50,000 years ago in Africa, this population mated with modern humans, prior to the primary exodus into Asia and Europe. This specific lineage contributes approximately 1% of the modern human genome, a proportion similar to the DNA inherited from Neanderthals. Such crossbreeding happened prior to the latest significant migration of Homo sapiens from Africa. Consequently, this specific genetic legacy is present in all modern humans, not just those living in Africa.

Another, even older 'super-archaic' group originated from a bloodline existing roughly 1.8 million years ago. This population likely interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia more than 200,000 years ago. This genetic material then entered the modern human gene pool indirectly through the Denisovans. These discoveries suggest that human evolution is not a straight line, but a complex history of repeated encounters and mixing among many related hominin populations. The super-archaic group's genetic contribution was passed down to us via the Denisovans. This complex web of interbreeding highlights how our evolutionary tree contains more knots than previously imagined.
