Our family tree is a tangled web of 'ghost' ancestors
In short: We used to think human evolution was a straight line, but our DNA tells a story of complex knots and hidden relatives. New techniques are revealing genetic signatures from species we have never seen fossils for, proving that our past is far more crowded than once imagined.
Recent research has identified traces of two distinct 'ghost' ancestors within the modern human genome. Unlike Neanderthals or Denisovans, whose remains provide physical evidence, these lineages are known only through the genetic snippets they left behind in our DNA. One of these ghost species interbred with Homo sapiens more than 50,000 years ago, while another contributed material indirectly through Denisovans over 200,000 years ago.
The study published on July 30 in the journal Science utilizes a novel method that bypasses the need for ancient DNA preservation. By examining current-day human genomes, researchers can pinpoint exactly when these ancient relatives entered our genetic instruction book. Instead of requiring exceptional fossil remains to study vanished groups, researchers can now interpret biological records stored within our own genetic makeup.
The broader context of our evolution is equally complex. While Homo sapiens evolved around 300,000 years ago, our ancestors diverged from a common African lineage between 550,000 and 765,000 years ago. As populations migrated out of Africa, they encountered and interbred with cousins like Neanderthals and Denisovans. Today, non-African individuals carry about 1 to 2 percent Neanderthal DNA, while those from Asia and Oceania may carry up to 5 percent Denisovan DNA.
Adding to this complexity is the discovery of 'Dragon Man,' a cranium found in China that may represent an entirely new species. This find suggests that our closest evolutionary relatives might be even more diverse than current models account for, reinforcing the idea that the human story is one of constant merging and overlapping lineages.
