The chip that taught your phone how to multitask efficiently
In short: Most processors treat every task with equal intensity, wasting power on simple emails while struggling with heavy games. The Apple A10 Fusion changed this by introducing heterogeneous computing—a system where different types of cores handle specific workloads based on their strengths.
Introduced in 2016 with the iPhone 7, the A10 Fusion was a milestone for Apple silicon. It was the first chip in their lineup to feature a quad-core CPU and support heterogeneous computing. This architecture utilizes two distinct types of cores: high-performance 'Hurricane' cores and energy-efficient 'Zephyr' cores. By pairing these together (two of each), the A10 could dynamically allocate resources, choosing between raw power for video editing or extreme efficiency for background tasks like checking mail.
However, the A10 differs significantly from other contemporary designs like the Exynos 8895. While many 'big.LITTLE' architectures allow all cores to run simultaneously, the A10 is restricted so that only one type of core pair can be active at any given time. This means that despite having four physical cores, it often appears as a dual-core chip in software benchmarks. To manage this, Apple implemented a real-time performance controller that decides which pair should take over based on the immediate demands of the software.
Beyond processing power, the A10 integrated significant hardware security and media advancements. It featured kernel integrity protection to shield driver code and 'Sealed Key Protection' for encrypting cryptographic keys using hardware identifiers. Its 6-core GPU provided a 50% speed increase over the A9 while consuming only 66% of its power, largely due to proprietary designs utilizing lower half-precision floating-point numbers. The chip also served as the foundation for the Apple T2 security coprocessor.
