Could microscopic civilizations be hiding in plain sight on Earth?

Are Aliens living among us on earth? A scientific look · 10:26 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: We often imagine extraterrestrials as human-sized visitors from distant stars. But if we shift our perspective away from human biology and toward different scales of matter, the possibility of undetected life becomes a fascinating scientific puzzle involving quantum computing, silicon-based life, and vastly different perceptions of time.

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is often hampered by anthropocentric bias. Because we lack a reference point other than ourselves, popular culture depicts aliens as humanoid beings with two arms and two legs. However, if intelligent life exists elsewhere, it is highly unlikely to mirror our specific evolutionary path. Scientists suggest that considering different size scales—such as organisms significantly smaller than humans—could change the parameters of what we are looking for.

If an advanced civilization were based on silicon rather than carbon-based DNA, they might utilize quantum computing-like technology. This could theoretically allow a brain with intelligence equal to or greater than a human's to fit onto something as small as a grain of sand. Such entities would possess incredibly small heat signatures and physical profiles, potentially allowing them to exist among us without triggering our current detection methods.

The logistics of interstellar travel present another hurdle. To reach Earth from the nearest star system (4.5 light-years away) in a human timeframe, ships would need to travel at a large fraction of the speed of light. While high-speed travel creates detectable energy signatures—like the equivalent of 10 hydrogen bombs for just 1/10th the speed of light—slower travel might only produce microwave radiation. Furthermore, if these beings perceive time differently, they could interact with our world on a timescale so rapid that we would remain completely unaware of their presence.

Ultimately, while current technology allows us to rule out advanced civilizations in our own solar system, the possibility of tiny, silicon-based entities remains a theoretical frontier. Even at 1/10th the speed of light, it would take 45 to 100 years for such craft to reach us from nearby stars, meaning any current presence would have required significant historical transit.
