The terrifying possibility that you are the only conscious being
In short: You can experience your own thoughts, but you can never truly inhabit someone else's mind. This leaves us with a haunting philosophical dilemma: is everyone else just a sophisticated biological machine? Explore the science and logic behind solipsism and the problem of other minds.
Solipsism is an extreme form of skepticism suggesting that you are the only conscious entity in existence. From your perspective, all sentience is internal; everything else—including other people—could be a 'philosophical zombie' or a mindless bot. Because each person is sealed within an impermeable prison of subjective awareness, you can only infer the existence of others through indirect means like behavior and speech, rather than firsthand access to their inner lives.
This creates a profound logical hurdle known as the 'problem of other minds.' While natural selection gifted humans with a 'theory of mind' to intuit emotions and intentions, we also possess a counter-tendency to deceive one another. Science currently lacks an objective 'consciousness detector' to prove whether others are truly sentient. However, some estimates suggest that within 30 years, technology might allow us to enter another's brain to settle the question once and for all.
The implications reach into physics and information theory. While information theory posits that a closed system lacks the capacity to produce greater complexity than its own state, our universe exceeds the intricacy of any single human brain. If we assume reality is subjective or even a simulation, some theories—such as 2019 research by Massimiliano Proietti—suggest that at the quantum level, multiple realities could be correct simultaneously. Ultimately, while science assumes an objective reality exists, it cannot currently prove it.
If consciousness is just the result of electromagnetic signals firing in a processor (the brain), then humans and advanced AIs might share the same fundamental mechanics. If our subjective realities interact and allow us to independently observe the same physical world, it suggests we are all part of a shared reality, even if we can never truly 'see' inside each other's heads.
