How a Pasadena design school became the first to earn United Nations NGO status.
In short: Founded in 1930 as a vocational training ground for commercial artists, ArtCenter College of Design evolved into a global powerhouse. By 2003, it achieved a unique distinction: becoming the first design college recognized as a non-governmental organization by the United Nations for its commitment to addressing critical humanitarian issues.
Originally established in downtown Los Angeles as the ArtCenter School, the institution was designed to foster visual arts and design expertise. Its early history was deeply intertwined with the technical needs of the mid-20th century, notably through a technical illustration program run alongside the California Institute of Technology during World War II. This vocational focus helped returning G.I.s transition into commercial art careers, a legacy that eventually led to the school awarding its first degrees in 1949.
The college’s physical footprint is as distinct as its academic mission. In 1976, it moved to the Hillside Campus in Pasadena, featuring a modernist 'bridge building' designed by Craig Ellwood that spans an arroyo. In 2004, the school expanded to a South Campus, housed in a renovated World War II-era aircraft-testing facility. These spaces are more than classrooms; they function as professional studios equipped with rapid prototyping technologies, including multi-axis CNC and 3D printing, reflecting the school's emphasis on learning by making.
Today, ArtCenter is recognized for its rigorous approach to industrial design, film, and media practices. Beyond technical skill, the curriculum encourages students to consider the social impact of their work. This philosophy culminated in its 2003 UN recognition, highlighting the institution's role in using design to solve complex global problems. With a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs, the school continues to bridge the gap between creative expression and practical, humanitarian application.
