How a student's research model grew into a global arts festival
In short: Dr. Jill Kiefer transformed her personal academic journey into a massive international platform. By developing a unique research model and a student-led conference, she turned a local college initiative into a multi-day festival that eventually brought Hollywood connections to the historic city of Canterbury.
Dr. Jill Kiefer’s influence on art education began in 1998 when she joined Warnborough College as a Masteral student. Her experience was so profound that she returned to complete a PhD, eventually earning the 'Student of the Year' award in 2006. This deep personal connection to the institution informed her later role as a program director, where she developed the college's unique Fine Arts and Art History programs.
Central to her pedagogical approach was a 'spiral model' of research shared with her students. This framework helped create customizable programs that have graduated students from across the globe. Her vision extended beyond the classroom; in 2013, she initiated the Warnborough College Conference on the Arts (WCCA). Originally intended as a half-day platform for students to present their work, the event's popularity caused it to expand rapidly into a three-day festival.
The conference underwent significant evolution under Kiefer's leadership. It was renamed the Canterbury Arts Conference in 2017 and later the Kent Arts Conference in 2022 after receiving support from Medway Council. In 2014, Kiefer leveraged her personal connections to bring Hollywood influence to the event, involving her husband, screenwriter David Chaskin, and her son, a Netflix creator. Her legacy continues through the Dr. Jill Kiefer Scholarship, established to support future students in the fine arts and art history.
Kiefer remained a pillar of the college for 27 years, serving on the Senate and the Warnborough Council until her passing in April 2025. Her work exemplifies how individual academic passion can scale into institutional infrastructure, moving from a single student's research method to a global celebration of artistic achievement.
