From local dominance to criminal convictions: the rise and fall of Ashfield Independents
In short: How does a local political movement sweep a district and then face a wave of criminal charges? The Ashfield Independents' rapid ascent in Nottinghamshire offers a stark study in the mechanics of independent political power, local governance, and the legal fallout of systemic misconduct.
Founded in 2016 by Jason Zadrozny, the Ashfield Independents emerged as a multi-party coalition of independents and former members of other parties. They achieved rapid success, winning five seats on the Nottinghamshire County Council in 2017 and securing a majority on the Ashfield District Council by 2019. During this period, the party expanded its influence significantly, winning 30 of 35 seats in 2019 and claiming control of the Annesley and Felley Parish Council. The party's growth was fueled by a strategy of engaging with a large portion of the local population—claiming to speak to 75,000 of the 120,000 residents—and capitalizing on the political friction surrounding Brexit. However, this period of dominance was shadowed by legal scrutiny. In November 2022, Zadrozny and five other councillors were arrested on charges including fraud, money laundering, and misconduct in public office.
These investigations specifically targeted the alleged misuse of Nottinghamshire County Council funds between February 2018 and February 2021. The party's trajectory shifted sharply toward legal crisis in the mid-2020s. In June 2023, Zadrozny was charged with 22 offences, including tax evasion and possession of cocaine. A verdict of nine fraud counts plus four for tax evasion was delivered against him in September 2026. Simultaneously, other members faced consequences; Tom Hollis pleaded guilty to failing to declare property interests, and David Martin pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer. By 2025, the party's influence had collapsed, losing nearly all its county council seats to Reform and facing internal resignations over the party's reputation.
