The four equations that built the modern technological world
In short: From the phone in your pocket to the Large Hadron Collider, modern technology relies on a set of four equations. This video breaks down the complex math of Maxwell's equations to reveal how they unified electricity and magnetism.
Published in 1865, Maxwell's equations describe the fundamental relationship between electricity and magnetism. Before these were unified, the two were often viewed as unrelated forces. The video explores the mathematical foundations required to understand them, including gradients, divergence, curl, and partial derivatives.
The journey to these equations began in 1820 when Hans Christian Ørsted discovered a link between electricity and magnetism. This led to André-Marie Ampère's laws on magnetic fields and Michael Faraday's discovery of electromagnetic induction. While Faraday was not a trained mathematician, his visual concept of 'lines of force' provided the framework for Maxwell's mathematical synthesis.
