Your body is mostly water, but what remains is complex chemistry
In short: If you could magically evaporate every drop of water from your body, you would be left with a sophisticated architectural feat of four primary molecules. From the structural walls of plants to the hormones regulating your mood, life is built on a specific chemical blueprint.
While humans are primarily composed of water—ranging from 31% in bones to 79% in muscles and kidneys—the remaining dry matter consists of four essential biological molecules: proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids like DNA. These molecules are not just random chemicals; their specific structures dictate their biological functions. For instance, while carbohydrates and lipids are relatively simple, consisting only of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, proteins require a more complex elemental kit that includes nitrogen and sometimes sulfur.
Carbohydrates serve as the body's primary energy units and structural materials. They range from simple monosaccharides like glucose to complex polysaccharides. Plants use cellulose for cell walls and starch to store surplus glucose produced during photosynthesis. In contrast, animals utilize glycogen as their storage unit, primarily located in liver and muscle tissues. This distinction shows how different life forms have evolved unique ways to manage the same basic building blocks of sugar.
Proteins represent a level of complexity where shape is everything. Built from 20 different amino acids, these polymers can fold into nearly infinite configurations, allowing for approximately 50,000 different types in the human body alone. Because proteins are held together by weak bonds, they are highly sensitive to heat; if temperatures rise too high, enzymes denature and lose their shape, halting vital processes like digestion or DNA copying. This delicate balance of chemistry allows proteins to act as everything from structural components in cell membranes to hormones like insulin and antibodies that fight infection.
