Quantum physics doesn't travel backward in time
In short: The Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser is frequently cited as evidence for retro causality, suggesting that future events can influence the past. However, this phenomenon is actually a misunderstanding of quantum mechanics. By examining how entangled particles behave, we can see that the results are governed by correlation rather than time travel.
The confusion stems from a misunderstanding of how quantum measurements work. In the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics, particles like photons exist as waves until they interact with something that causes an irreversible energy exchange. This process, known as "wave collapse," localizes the wave into a particle. When a photon passes through a Barium Borate crystal, it splits into a pair of entangled photons. This very process acts as a measurement, collapsing the wave function and providing "which-way" information about the photon's path.
In the specific setup of the Delayed Choice Quantum Eraser, the photons reach detector 1 (D1) before they reach the other detectors (D2, D3, D4, or D5). Because the path to D1 is shorter, it appears as though the future results at the later detectors are influencing the past results at D1. This creates the illusion of retro causality, but the physics is actually governed by entanglement.
In truth, the initial screen remains unaffected by the quantum eraser. Instead, the patterns appear to change because scientists are selecting specific subsets of photons at D1 to correlate with the results at the other detectors. Because the particles are entangled, they share a connection that allows for these correlations to be sorted after the fact, without any information actually traveling backward through time.
This distinction is vital for a correct understanding of quantum mechanics. By moving away from classical thinking—where objects have definite paths regardless of observation—and embracing the wave-particle duality, we see that the experiment is a demonstration of quantum correlation rather than a violation of the linear flow of time.
