Why adding 'irrelevant' details can break AI mathematical reasoning
In short: Can ChatGPT actually think through a math problem, or is it just predicting the next word? New research from Apple researchers reveals how specific linguistic tweaks can expose the limitations of even the most advanced models.
Researchers tested Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT o1-mini and o1-preview using a modified version of the GSM8k database, which contains grade school math questions. To test for true reasoning, they systematically altered the problems in three ways: swapping names and numbers, increasing length with more clauses at the same difficulty level, and introducing irrelevant information.
The study found that while all changes posed challenges, adding irrelevant clauses was the most significant hurdle for top-tier models. This suggests that LLMs may struggle to filter out noise, a key component of human-like reasoning, potentially relying on pattern recognition rather than deep logical processing.
