Superfetation: The rare phenomenon of becoming pregnant while already expecting
In short: Most people assume that once a pregnancy begins, the body locks down to prevent a second one. However, a rare phenomenon called superfetation challenges this biological rule, involving two separate conceptions occurring in back-to-back menstrual cycles within the same pregnancy.
In a typical pregnancy, the body employs several biological safeguards to prevent a second conception. Hormonal shifts usually stop the ovaries from releasing further eggs, and a mucus plug forms in the cervix to block sperm from entering the uterus. Even if fertilization were to occur, the existing pregnancy creates a hormonal environment that makes it difficult for a new embryo to implant in the uterine lining. Specifically, the cervical mucus plug acts as a physical barrier between the vagina and the uterus. Furthermore, the hormonal changes are designed to halt ovulation entirely.
Superfetation is so rare that researchers lack sufficient data to confirm its exact causes, as only a handful of such cases have been documented. Many instances involve assistive reproductive technologies (ART) that bypass these natural barriers. For example, in one case involving in vitro fertilization (IVF), a provider discovered a third embryo three weeks after the procedure, despite the patient having already become pregnant with twins through IVF. This occurs because the medical process involves fertilising eggs outside the body before transferring them into the uterus.
Other documented cases involve artificial insemination combined with medications used to stimulate the ovaries. In one such instance, doctors discovered a second pregnancy after the first was found to be ectopic—a non-viable pregnancy where the embryo fails to implant in the uterine lining. Another case involved a surrogate who discovered she was carrying a second embryo six months after being impregnated with another couple's embryo via IVF. In this scenario, the initial pregnancy was located outside the uterine lining.
