How a Pennsylvania borough became a temporary namesake for a global kitchenware icon
In short: Settled by Belgian glassmakers in the 1890s, Charleroi, Pennsylvania, once thrived as a global industrial powerhouse. Known as the Magic City, it later gained fame for a unique 100-day rebranding stunt in 2015. Today, the town is evolving again, shaped by its history and a new wave of international migration.
Founded in 1890 and incorporated the following year, Charleroi sits along the Monongahela River in Washington County. Its early identity was forged by Belgian immigrants who brought their glass-making expertise to the region. This industry eventually scaled to massive proportions; the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company facility in town once employed approximately one thousand workers, ranking among the world's largest glass factories of its era.
The town's industrial legacy remains visible through its connection to Pyrex, manufactured by Corelle Brands. In 2015, the borough celebrated the centennial of the Pyrex brand by officially renaming itself Pyrex, Pennsylvania, for a period of 100 days. This nod to its manufacturing heritage highlights how deeply the glass industry is woven into the local identity, even as the broader regional economy shifted away from its steel-making roots.
Beyond industry, Charleroi has served as a cultural touchstone. It was home to one of the nation's earliest movie houses, the Electric Theatre, which opened in 1905. The town has also appeared in fiction, notably as a coal-mining hub in the alternate history novel The Two Georges. In this narrative, the town is depicted as a site of exploitation and radical political unrest under a fictional British-ruled North America.
Recent years have seen demographic shifts, with the population experiencing both decline and renewal. While the 2020 census recorded 4,234 residents, the borough has seen a more recent influx of immigrants from nations such as Haiti, Jamaica, and Liberia. This new population has contributed to the revitalization of the local business district, marking the latest chapter in a town that has continuously reinvented itself since the late 19th century.
