How a 19th-century American religious movement transformed into a global faith tradition
In short: Emerging from the fervor of frontier revivals, the Latter Day Saint movement began with Joseph Smith’s claims of divine restoration. What started as a small group in western New York evolved through intense persecution, a massive migration to the desert, and the establishment of a lasting international religious institution.
The movement originated in the 1830s when Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon, a text he claimed to have translated from ancient golden plates discovered after angelic guidance. Smith taught that God had restored the primitive Christian church, a message that resonated during the Second Great Awakening. This millennialist faith emphasized the imminent return of Christ and the creation of a dedicated kingdom of God, or Zion, in the American West.
Early growth was marked by significant social and political friction. As the movement expanded, members faced hostility from neighbors in Missouri and Illinois, driven by concerns over their communal economic practices, political influence, and the practice of polygamy. These tensions culminated in the 1844 killing of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum by a violent mob while they were held in a Carthage jail. Following this crisis, Brigham Young emerged as the leader of the majority, guiding the faithful on a perilous 1,100-mile journey to the Great Basin.
In Utah, the pioneers transformed the desert landscape through irrigation and the establishment of hundreds of communities. Despite ongoing conflicts with federal authorities over governance and the public announcement of polygamy in 1852, the church persisted. By the early 21st century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had grown into an international organization with over 16 million members, maintaining its headquarters in Salt Lake City while continuing its emphasis on missionary work, family life, and ongoing revelation.
