Global warming is just one piece of a much larger planetary puzzle
In short: While we often use the terms interchangeably, global warming and climate change describe different scales of environmental shifts. Understanding the distinction is vital to grasping the domino effect currently reshaping our oceans, glaciers, and atmosphere through human-driven greenhouse gas emissions.
Global warming refers specifically to the long-term rise in the planet's temperature. Since the pre-industrial era, Earth's surface temperature has risen by approximately 1.34 to 1.41 °C. This warming is driven primarily by human activities, specifically the burning of fossil fuels which releases heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere.
Climate change is a much broader term. It encompasses global warming but also includes the diverse, cascading consequences of that heat. These include rising sea levels, shrinking mountain glaciers, and shifts in the blooming periods of plants. To illustrate, roughly 33% of all carbon dioxide released since 1980 has been taken up by seas, driving a tenfold acceleration in ocean acidification compared to any time during the previous 65 million years.
The physical evidence is widespread. Between 2000 and 2023, global glaciers lost an estimated 5% of their remaining ice, with some regions like Central Europe seeing a 40% decline. Sea levels have risen by roughly 20 cm over the last century, a rate that has more than doubled since satellite measurements began. This rise is driven by both melting land ice and the expansion of warming ocean water.
These changes are not uniform. The Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as other regions, and temperature increases have been more pronounced over land than over oceans. While natural variability will still produce cold seasons, the overall trend shows that the last decade (2015-2024) was the warmest ten-year period on record.
