Our world maps are being redrawn by rising seas and melting ice
In short: The geography of our planet is not static. While continental shifts usually take millions of years, human-driven climate change is accelerating geological transformation. By 2100, the boundaries of our continents and the appearance of new landmasses could be fundamentally altered by the warming of our oceans.
The primary driver of these geographical shifts is global climate change, specifically the warming of the planet due to human emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicates that global temperatures rose by almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) following the 1850-1900 timeframe due to such releases. Scientists have high confidence that temperatures will continue to rise for many decades, with the global average expected to reach or exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (about 3 degrees Fahrenheit) within the next few decades.
This warming triggers two fundamental mechanisms that reshape coastlines: seawater thermal expansion and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. As water warms, it expands; simultaneously, the melting of polar ice contributes to an accelerated sea level rise. These changes are already occurring, with scientists observing shrinking glaciers, earlier break-ups of river and lake ice, and shifting geographic ranges for plants and animals. Some of these environmental changes are now happening faster than previous scientific assessments predicted.
Beyond the loss of land, the map of 2100 may feature entirely new additions. The emergence of new islands can occur through two distinct pathways. One is natural, driven by the melting of the poles and the inland advance of the sea. The other is artificial, resulting from human engineering and reforestation projects. These transformations represent a significant challenge for the 21st century, as the resulting changes to infrastructure, environment, and society will be profound and, in some cases, irreversible over the next hundreds to thousands of years.
