The invisible balance that keeps a rocket rising into space
In short: Why does a massive rocket move upward when there is nothing to push against in the vacuum of space? The answer lies in a fundamental law of physics: momentum. It is a constant cosmic accounting system where every action must have an equal and opposite reaction.
Linear momentum is defined as the product of an object's mass and its velocity. In any isolated collection of objects, this total momentum remains constant over time. This principle means that in a closed system—where no external forces interfere—the sum of individual momenta must stay the same. When two particles collide, for example, what one particle loses in momentum is exactly what the other gains.
A crucial nuance of this law is that momentum is a vector quantity, meaning it accounts for both magnitude and direction. Because of this, objects moving in opposite directions can have momenta that cancel each other out to reach an overall sum of zero. This explains how complex systems can maintain equilibrium even while individual parts are in rapid motion.
Consider the launch of a rocket. Before ignition, the total momentum of the rocket and its fuel is zero. As it ascends, the downward momentum of the expanding exhaust gases perfectly equals the upward momentum of the rising rocket. Because these two forces are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, the total momentum of the system remains at zero throughout the flight.
Physicists can mathematically deduce this law based on the presumption that space is uniform. This means there is nothing in the laws of nature that treats one position in space as special compared to any other. While kinetic energy is only maintained in completely elastic collisions, linear momentum is conserved in all types of collisions.
