In short: In the heart of London, a 60-year-old sports complex stands as a feat of mid-century engineering. Beyond its role as an athletics stadium, the building features a delicate exposed concrete frame and a folded teak lining, designed to serve both elite international performers and local residents.

Opened in 1964, the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre (CPNSC) is a Grade II* listed multi-sports venue that embodies a unique architectural vision. Designed by the LCC Architects Department between 1953 and 1954, the indoor sports building was intended to be a high-performance hub. It features a complex central concourse where a reinforced concrete frame supports a roof lined with folded teak. This structural choice balances the industrial strength of concrete with the aesthetic warmth of wood. The facility is divided into distinct 'wet' and 'dry' zones. The wet side houses a 50-meter competition pool and a diving pool featuring a dramatic reinforced concrete diving platform. The dry side contains a sports arena for basketball and gymnastics.

This dual-purpose layout was specifically planned to accommodate serious international athletes while remaining accessible to local enthusiasts, a distinction noted by Historic England. The venue has a storied history of hosting diverse events, from the first Women’s FA Cup final to international swimming and motor-racing. While the 60-year-old estate requires significant investment, a major redevelopment project is currently underway. This project, involving Morgan Sindall Construction, aims to refurbish the iconic structure while preserving its heritage. Major works are expected to begin in the second half of 2026, focusing on sustainable upgrades to the athletics stadium, swimming pools, and indoor sports halls.
