The artist who turned a restaurant into a narrative world
In short: Dave McKean is known for haunting graphic novels and surrealist film, but his most unexpected role is as the Director of Story for a world-renowned restaurant. He doesn't just design menus; he treats culinary experiences as immersive, multi-media narratives.
Dave McKean's career is defined by a mastery of multi-media storytelling, spanning graphic novels, film, and sculpture. His prominence grew late in the 1980s via a link to Neil Gaiman; notably, 'Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth' sold upwards of 260,000 items in 1989. His work often bridges the gap between the tangible and the surreal, a quality that led him to design everything from the covers of 'The Sandman' to concept art for the 'Harry Potter' films.
A unique facet of McKean's career is his involvement in the culinary arts. In 2008, he collaborated with Heston Blumenthal on 'The Fat Duck Cookbook,' a project that explored Blumenthal's scientific approach to cooking. This partnership evolved into a deeper structural role: McKean became the Director of Story at The Fat Duck. In this capacity, he helped relaunch the restaurant in 2015, overseeing the creation of package designs, maps, murals, and menu designs to ensure the dining experience functions as a cohesive narrative.
McKean's versatility also extends to science and children's literature. In 2011, he teamed up with Richard Dawkins to produce 'The Magic of Reality,' a work teaching youngsters about scientific principles and analytical thought. Whether he is illustrating a biography of a rock star, designing posters for film festivals, or creating wordless erotic graphic novels, his work consistently focuses on the intersection of visual art and complex, layered storytelling.
