The socialist who discovered the working class in bed
In short: For Daniel Guérin, revolution wasn't found in textbooks first; it was felt in the flesh. A French radical who bridged Marxism and anarchism, Guérin argued that his political awakening was inseparable from his sexual identity, creating a unique synthesis of carnal quest and social justice.
Born into wealth in 1904, Daniel Guérin was an elite student who famously dropped out of Sciences Po in 1925, dismissing formal studies as 'idiocies.' While he was a gifted poet, his political conversion was notably non-intellectual. He claimed that his engagement with socialism didn't stem from reading Marx, but from sexual affairs with young Parisian workers. He argued that his 'phallism' and socialism were not in contradiction but formed a 'deep synthesis' of his being, where social injustice was felt as a physical reality rather than a theoretical concept.
Guérin's radicalization deepened through travel and direct action. He documented the 'barbarity' of French colonialism in places like Indochina and Lebanon, often aiding local Communists and Trotskyists. In 1933, he famously toured Germany by bicycle to smuggle illegal leaflets out of Nazi-controlled territory. His writings, such as 'Fascism and Big Business' (1936), argued that fascism was an instrument of big capital. He later balanced these views by researching the history of anarchism, eventually seeking to connect the working class with anarchist ideology as a libertarian-communist.
A pivotal figure in queer history, Guérin remained closeted for much of his life due to the homophobia of the French Left. However, he began advocating for sexual freedom in the 1950s, eventually coming out after the May 1968 uprising. He believed that gay liberation could only be 'total and irreversible' if achieved within a broader social revolution. By the time of his death in 1988, he was regarded as a 'grandfather' of the French gay liberation movement, having bridged the gap between sexology, anti-colonialism, and revolutionary politics.
