How Canadian artist David Finch transformed the sales trajectory of major comic book franchises
In short: David Finch is a Canadian illustrator whose distinct visual style has consistently moved the needle for industry giants Marvel and DC. From doubling sales on The Avengers to revitalizing Moon Knight, his work has redefined the commercial and creative impact of some of the world's most iconic superhero properties.
David Finch began his professional journey at Top Cow Productions, taking over the artistic duties for Cyberforce after the series creator, Marc Silvestri, stepped down. His early career was defined by collaborative efforts, including co-creating Ascension and contributing to Aphrodite IX. However, his transition to Marvel Comics in 2003 marked a significant turning point. Partnering with writer Brian Michael Bendis on Ultimate X-Men, Finch quickly established himself as a powerhouse. Their subsequent work on The Avengers was particularly transformative; the duo dismantled the existing team and relaunched it as New Avengers, an effort that saw sales double starting with Finch's debut issue.
Finch's influence extended beyond team dynamics to individual character arcs. His collaboration with novelist Charlie Huston on a revamped Moon Knight series is credited with catapulting the character into the primary Marvel continuity, with sales figures reaching more than five times the volume of previous releases. This period of success was punctuated by high-profile contributions to major storylines, including Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America and the Ultimatum limited series. His artistic reach even crossed into other media, as he provided concept art for the film adaptation of Watchmen and created album cover art for the band Disturbed.
In 2010, Finch transitioned to an exclusive contract with DC Comics, where he continued to shape major titles. He collaborated with Grant Morrison on the oversized Batman #700 and launched the ongoing series Batman: The Dark Knight. His career has been marked by a series of high-profile relaunches and creative partnerships, including his work with Geoff Johns on Justice League of America and his collaborative efforts with his wife, Meredith Finch, on Wonder Woman. Throughout his career, Finch has received numerous accolades, including a 2008 Eagle Award for his cover work on World War Hulk and a 2017 Eisner Award for his short story work with Tom King.
